Painted Building
Yesterday I wandered around the canal and then into Molenbeek for the weekly market. On the way I took a detour to photograph this remarkable building. I just love the comic book murals that are dotted all over the city, but this takes things one step further. I'm all in favour of anything that brings colour and imagination into the city.
The market was fun, but with an Arabic feel to one end and a Flemish feel to the other. It was massive and I gave up wandering through the narrow, crowded streets after a while.

Let alone the weekly market, you can find shops and supermarkets open on Sundays, like in any Arabic/Turkish neighbourhood of this city. But Molenbeek is also a place where you can still buy a loft or a house at a very 'reasonable' price. So people are investing there and the upgrade is slowly but surely on its way. That district is becoming a trendy one and and mark my words, we won't recognise it in a couple of decades. This building was certainly worth the detour.
I liked the area, it had a real vibe and energy to it.
Speaking of canals, I forgot to tell you about Rivertours.be. I'm doing the Brussels boat&cycle tour this Sunday, so help me God... I can't remember when I drove a bike for last time.

If you find Midi market a bit hard to negotiate, Q, try Les Abattoirs just up the road - metro Clemenceau - it's all in one enclosed area, and neatly divided up into meat, fish, veg, etc. sections. Very Arabic too, but they have the monopoly on Belgian markets these days. If the Belgians gripe, they should be prepared to get up at 4 in the morning.
