Place Flagey

The Belgian flag flies from the Flagey building. This enormous square is undergoing complete renovation. Basically, they're running the trams round the square, rather than straight through it and then paving the lot, adding a couple of trees, some environmentally unfriendly fountains and some sort of unspecified illuminative art thingy.

The works are planned to continue till the end of next year. when they'll actually finish is another matter. To keep up to date with developments they've got a blog, which is occasionally updated

The square does boast the achingly hip Belga bar and the Frites Flagey are meant to be the best in Belgium

Scroll down here to see what that square looked like in 1938. Works have been going on for ages over there, one does indeed wonder when they will actually finish, especially the riverains.

Is the friterie still there? It used to be ON the square, now I really don't know what happened to it. I must go and have a look then. Oh, and I'm taking my camera with me tomorrow. I warned you, I'm joining in!

I've looked through the plans for the new square and the friterie is back on the plaza.

I have to say that the new design doesn't look all that inspiring, at least on paper, to my eyes.

Not to mention the wonderful restaurant in the other side of the building, 'Le Varietes' - the civet de biche is absolutely delicious!

Shame the square looks so bad...

The place is a mess right now, and has been for some time. To get the full horror check it out on Google Maps.
